The dark side of technology

We all love new technologies because it makes us more productive and happy in our lives but very few of us who think about the disadvantages of technology. One of them called “Technological Singularity

Singularity happens when the machine becomes capable of processing instructions faster than the human brain. It’s predicted to occur around 2045 -by Ray Kurzweil– as the fastest PC’s speed is 177,730 MIPS (Million Instruction Per Second) and the fastest supercomputer’s speed is 10^10 MIPS which is close to the human brain’s speed (around 10^14 MIPS).

After this point, the machine can predict easily what we’re gonna do before we even think about it. How ? by simply creating a decision tree.

A decision tree is a list of actions and its consequences, something like if X do Y, else if Z do L and so on. The deeper the tree the more possibilities it contains and when a machine is faster than the human brain it can go out of control because it will predict your actions towards the situation.

Lets take playing chess with a computer that is faster than your brain as an example. The computer will be able to create a tree of every move you make and the move next to it by going deeper into this tree. You won’t be able by any means to defeat the computer because you can barely predict the next 2 or 3 moves but the computer will predict far more than that and with the goal of defeating you the computer will definitely win !

But how that can be dangerous ? that’s what the I, Robot movie was talking about. By more machine intelligence it will predict that humans by their nature create conflicts when dealing with each other everyday and there is no way to come over these conflicts except by preventing humans to deal with each other because that’s what robots are supposed to do, to SAVE US according to the three laws or robotics by Isaac Asimov :

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.
This will create a conflict between us and the machines which want to control our actions to prevent harm and every action we will think about to end this conflict will be predicted by the machines even shutting them down and that conflict may not end easily or may not end at all !
The solution in I, Robot was to make the machines feel not just think and calculate and let their feelings control their actions. This may change the alternatives of the conflict.
But don’t rely on that because we don’t yet fully understand how feelings works inside us, so we can’t implement them in machines in the near future.

Time

I was watching a show on Discovery Science called “Through the wormhole with Morgan Freeman”. I recommend you to watch it, it’s really a great show and sorry I can’t share the episode, I don’t wanna be another SOPA victim like Megaupload :D
The show was talking about what is time, does it exists or it’s just an illusion and can we control it or not.
There was different perspectives from different people but the most perspective that convinced me is that time doesn’t exist, it just represents the difference between actions.

The proof of this assumption is when we are bored and the difference between actions is huge we feel the time passing slowly. Although when we’re excited or active time goes by fast. Try staring at a clock or wait for somebody for 5 mins in a quiet place and another 5 mins playing your favorite game or chatting with your friend and compare the feeling of time between these different actions then you’ll know what I mean.
Another thing controlling your feel of time is your mind. When you’re in a critical situation like an accident or something you are extremely focused and your mind registers a lot of memories in a short period. Also in sleeping, when your dream is full of actions you feel that you’ve slept a lot while when you don’t remember your dream, you don’t feel that you’ve slept a lot (whether you feel rested or not). You can try this by closing windows tightly and not letting sunlight in and don’t look at a clock after you wake up, you wont be able to know what time it is.

This means that time doesn’t exist! and if you’re not yet convinced, what would happen if there wasn’t a sun and the earth was static ? simply we wouldn’t have made a 24 hours clock because there wont be something called day. We wont be able to measure a day, month or even a year. All these things are representations of the movement of the earth around the sun.
So by that, we can’t control time because it never exists.

At last I don’t know if this is the actual meaning of time but it seems pretty logical to me.

Change

“An object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by an unbalanced force. An object in motion continues in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.” This is Newton’s first law of motion but actually not only motion that follows this law , people every day tends to stabilization at their work , social and personal life or maybe in every action of their daily life until we face a danger or something threatens our stabilization that forces us to take the risk and change the way we think and act , we’re just like a blind man walking in a one way road that is full of barriers and we have to get to the end of it , so don’t be afraid of what you don’t know , take risks and have the ability to change

The most thing inspired me to write this topic is a conversation in the movie “The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)” between an old man “Professor Barnhardt” and the alien “Klaatu” that came to tell the people that the earth is in danger and the whole human race must die to save the earth
(I searched for a video of that part of the movie but I didn’t find anything)

“Professor Barnhardt: There must be alternatives. You must have some technology that could solve our problem.
Klaatu: Your problem is not technology. The problem is you. You lack the will to change.
Professor Barnhardt: Then help us change.
Klaatu: I cannot change your nature. You treat the world as you treat each other.
Professor Barnhardt: But every civilization reaches a crisis point eventually.
Klaatu: Most of them don’t make it.
Professor Barnhardt: Yours did. How?
Klaatu: Our sun was dying. We had to evolve in order to survive.
Professor Barnhardt: So it was only when your world was threated with destruction that you became what you are now.
Klaatu: Yes.
Professor Barnhardt: Well that’s where we are. You say we’re on the brink of destruction and you’re right. But it’s only on the brink that people find the will to change. Only at the precipice do we evolve. This is our moment. Don’t take it from us, we are close to an answer.”

Meaning of right and wrong

Its so obvious that life is a mixture of right and wrong things (wrong things are more than right ones by the way) , thats why we’ve got minds in our heads to decide which road to take , but what our decision should depend on ? it depends on whats right and whats wrong , and how would i know that this thing is right or wrong ? compare between this thing and the definition of right and wrong , so whats the definition of right and wrong ?
The definition of “right” is “وضع الشئ فى مكانه” or “putting thing in its place ” and the definition of wrong is the opposite of right of course.
Here comes a question , how would i know its place ? everything got several clues pointing to its place , like : fish belongs to the sea because they have no legs. but this is a very easy thing , no one can argue about it ! because the amount of thinking and effort done is according to the “amount of clues to where it should be” anything has , thats why when something needs a huge effort people will start arguing because they haven’t done the same effort.
Thats why i believe that the unit of everything in life is effort , and we’ll talk about that later :)

The goal behind reward and punishment

As we all know life is based on reward and punishment as the basic rule of every action that anyone of us is taking and any action is rewarding to enthuse you to do it or punishing to keep you away from doing it , thats what we all know , but there’s another thing that few people care about it which is learning.

Learning is an essential goal to anyone of us as the goal of humanity is praying to god and making earth a better place and its not a coincidence that the first word came down to the prophet Muhammed in quraan was “اقرأ” that leads to learn.
God also is not punishing us to just pass away some mistakes but the main target is teaching and guiding us , so its not a shame when you have a bad luck in some situations but you should be happy that you are learning a new thing , that doesn’t mean when your life is a little bit handy that you are not learning ! you can learn new things every moment and from every action even its a daily action like going to school or college and you can learn even when you’re asleep ( when you think about a problem before sleeping you will probably figure it out when waking up the next day because the brain activity and performance is much better when you’re sleeping than awake ).
We also should reward or punish people in a way that makes them learn a new thing , like in competitions , money rewarding is not the best reward , the real one is having an opportunity to work or train somewhere (if its a technical competition) or travelling into a different place ( if its a social competition ) and if  you are a parent don’t reward your kid by buying him a candy or sweets , also don’t punish him by preventing him from watching his favorite show on TV , we all can find a better solution by a little of thinking and will.
In the end we should all focus on our main target which is making earth a better place and its obvious that we’re not moving towards this target , especially in Egypt.
